I'm having another bout of insomnia, so maybe I'll pseudoblog in this thread. See, I don't even know how my (very infrequent) blogs even make it up to the top page. I sort of just email them to Colleen (tanukisunshine), and they magically appear.

That's one of my problems. There are a few things that I'm pretty good at. Anything outside of those domains, and I'm a complete waste of space. For example, it's a little-known fact that I'm photoshop-phobic.

Another irony is that I can probably implement a simple, but architecturally sound database system, but I don't really know the first thing about how to use one. This is from taking a whole bunch of database architecture classes in university (too long ago).

So what am I good at? I'm pretty good at writing code. But a lot of people are good at writing code.

I'm also good at software design (different from writing code). This is the art/craft of deciding how to divide up a given project into components, and determining how each component talks to each other and which components talk to the outside world. Also important is what kind of datasets each component needs to manage, and how well each component scales as the datasets increase in size. Lastly, but perhaps the most important for a project of this scope, is the ability to design things in a way that multiple people can work simultaneously without getting in the way of each other. This is probably the hardest part.

There are a lot of people that do this well, but it's quite a bit less than the amount of people who can just write code.

I also know a tiny bit about everything that happens to be relevant to this project...art, music, writing, RPGs (I still want to get a group together for some D&D...it's been way too long), japanese culture, web technologies, and marcomm (marketing and communications)...just enough to be able to talk intelligently about them so that I can communicate with someone who's better at it than I am so that I can make intelligent decisions.

I pretty much suck at everything else. Like, worse than suck. REALLY suck. Fail at life kind of suck. :P

See, there's a Ren'ai game / Visual Novel community out there already. Too many to mention. A lot of really cool fan endeavors out there too.

One might think that they are our target audience.

But they're not, really. There aren't enough of them to sustain a small, niche company like Okashi Studios, in my opinion.

Our audience does include them, but it's wider. It has to be. And we're together growing it...through promotion, informational panels, word of mouth, etc.

The established fan community out there is currently lurking in the periphery, waiting, watching...with no small amount of skepticism. See, historically, there have been a lot of attempts (mostly by fans of the genre) to start something similar in magnitude to this, and they always seem to fizzle out. Most don't make it past prototype character art. Which is really unfortunate, as I've been looking forward to a few.

On top of that, we've taken on something that I don't think anyone else has consciously attempted, but is arguably rather important. I'm referring to how we're trying to proactively widen a community rather than catering to a specific, established community. This needs to happen if Okashi Studios is to live through this to the next (and better) game.

So cut us a little slack, please. :) It's quite a lot of responsibility. :P

And a million thanks to all of you, the future class of Shira Oka Gakuen. You're all going to make this happen.
