I never really played with dolls/ponies as a kid, so it was news to me that My Little Pony actually had a storyline to it-- and a pretty good one too, if my source is to be believed. ;P But if that's true, then I think it would actually be pretty interesting if someone made a d20 campaign around it, complete with figurines and everything. (OT: That was the cutest beholder I've ever seen. XD)
I suppose it's unrealistic to expect an official release from Wizards of the Coast or Hasbro, but one of the neat things about releasing a gaming system/engine/toolset to the community is seeing what creative things people do with it. A company may not be interested in making a game unless it has fairly wide commercial appeal, but someone making a game for fun isn't under the same constraints. (Trademark issues ignored for the sake of discussion. ;P)
Neverwinter Nights was the first game where I played with the included toolset, and made some original content-- in fact, Andrew and I built and ran a persistent server for a while, with occasional DM-run adventures. (It was loads of fun... until we realized just how time-consuming and emotionally draining the upkeep was.) It's quite interesting to browse through listings of the modules and active game worlds others have made using the NWN toolset, especially ones in decidedly non-medieval settings. There was even an article about a university using NWN to make an educational module for a journalism class.
More recently, it was encouraging to hear about Microsoft's upcoming XNA Game Studio software, which will allow both hobbyists and professionals to make and distribute games for the XBox 360. Hopefully the other console makers will follow suit. And in the ren'ai gaming world, there are already some free tools available for building visual novels, including ONScripter, Ren'Py, and the fairly new Blade Engine. (I seem to recall hearing something about a tool for building sim-style games as well, but I don't remember the details now.)
Anyway, it's for the same reason that I'm a big fan of projects with strong community support, especially those where the developer genuinely seems willing to consider what community members suggest. The advent of the Internet has made it so much easier to exchange ideas and learn from one another, even crossing geographic and language barriers. Why not make the most of it?
