Last week was the annual Game Developers Conference right here in in our backyard, at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. I'm actually still recovering from GDC-- both with catching up on work from last week, as well as shaking off the nasty cold I picked up at the con. (Who here has gotten sick from a con? <_< ...and then promptly infected someone else as soon as you got back? >_> )
This was my second year at GDC, but the first year that I worked (volunteered) as a Conference Associate there. I've always wanted to try staffing at a con sometime, but these days I'm usually manning a booth at the cons that we go to. So I was quite happy when I found out I was chosen to be a CA this year... and admittedly a bit apprehensive to find out what I had gotten myself into...
I ended up really enjoying the experience (despite getting sick toward the end), and was proud to be a part of the well-oiled machine that is the CA staff. I was impressed by how professional-yet-friendly everyone acted, even during times of high stress. And it actually turned out to be kind of neat walking around in an eyeblindingly neon green shirt that could be seen from miles away and read "ASK ME -- I CAN HELP" on the back. :D That, and I really appreciated having a GDC Giga pass to use when I wasn't working. It allowed me to sit in on some interesting sessions that I normally wouldn't have gone to.
On Tuesday Andrew and I went to an "East Meets West" reception, where we got to meet a number of Japanese attendees and others with interest in Japan. Many of the people we met spoke only a little English, and although there were a couple translators available that night, it was more fun to mention Tokimeki Memorial and see the recognition and in their eyes-- and surprise that we knew about it. ^_^
Speaking of TokiMemo... I happened to sit in on a talk on Monday afternoon that discussed Brooktown High: Senior Year, an upcoming PSP game from Konami. It's supposed to be similar to TokiMemo, but for American gamers. (Sound familiar?) The speaker was Michael McCormick, the lead designer of Brooktown High, and he was gracious enough to meet with me and Andrew a few days later to talk further about our respective projects. Anyway, I'll leave the details to Andrew in his GDC blog entry. ;)
Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday were a blur of sessions, meetings, and random conference wandering. I was especially happy to attend a talk by Tsutomu Kouno, about the processes and difficulties he enountered in making LocoRoco. It was fun to see some of the early concept art and demos of the game, and I was surprised to hear how many times his game proposal got rejected before it was finally given the green light to be made. Needless to say, I'm so glad he persevered. :D
I also enjoyed the first half of the keynote speech by Shigeru Miyamoto (before I had to leave to for a work shift). One thing he said was that when designing a game, he thinks of the smile of someone who will be playing the game. That was a message I could relate to as an aspiring game designer myself, and also why I've been a fan of Nintendo games for such a long time. Their consoles may not have the most cutting edge graphics or features, but the games are always fun.
Anyway, now that GDC's over, I'm back to working on Shira Oka. The rest of the Okashi staff has also been hard at work finishing the game. The overall structure's pretty much all there, but there's an insane amount of content that needs to go into the game... well, we're gradually chipping away at the lists. ;)
I'll also be getting more focused on preparing for the upcoming convention season. We have new material to show in our booth and panel this year, so even if you visited us last year, I hope you'll stop by again this year. (Not to mention the special forum icon you'll get for coming to our booth. ;) I guess I should go dust off my seifuku. :P
